France and Portugal do battle on Sunday night for the Euro 2016 title – and much-vaunted midfielder Paul Pogba is the player we are backing to strike the first blow.

The host nation are hot favourites to lift the trophy at the Stade de France and few people outside Portugal would disagree that they deserve to, after winning five of their six matches in 90 minutes during the tournament whereas their opponents have done so only once.

Therefore, we think Didier Deschamps’ side will complete the job they set out to do when they kicked off Euro 2016 on June 10, and perhaps even do so with a clean sheet, so it is only France players that we are considering in the First Goalscorer market.

The obvious trio at the head of the market are Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet at best odds of 9/2, 11/2 and 8/1 respectively.

They have scored 12 of France’s 13 goals at Euro 2016 between them and Atletico Madrid playmaker Griezmann’s double in the semi-final against Germany means he now has six, double the tally of anyone else in the competition.

But it’s the only other man to have scored for France, Juventus midfielder Pogba, whom we are backing to break the deadlock in the final.

Whatever happens against Portugal, we will not have heard the last of the 23-year-old this summer because he is the subject of the current big transfer saga in relation to whether he will rejoin his former club Manchester United, potentially for a world record fee, or head to Real Madrid to play for France’s 1998 World Cup hero Zinedine Zidane.

There are definitely shades of Zidane in the way Pogba struts around the midfield and it is worth remembering that 18 years ago in the same stadium, the man nicknamed ‘Zizu’ buried a couple of headers in the first half to put France in the driving seat against Brazil in the World Cup Final.

Huge occasions such as this are made for the very best players and if Pogba is truly worthy of a world record transfer fee, there would be no better time to prove it than by putting his team on the way to the European crown.

Most bookmakers are offering single-figure odds, which makes the 14/1 at Coral incredible value. We have got on and suggest you do likewise – fingers crossed the price is still available when you are reading this.
