Key Players

France have a very talented pool of players to choose from for this tournament but due to a very strange off –field incident they could be without star striker Karim Benzema.

Benzema is currently suspended from international duty following a formal investigation over an alleged plot to blackmail his international team-mate and Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape. With the investigation still ongoing France boss Didier Deschamps has admitted if the matter is not resolved he has no choice but to not select the Real Madrid frontman.

With Benzema out of the frame the likes of Anthony Martial, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud will carry the burden of firing home the goals. All eyes will be on Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba at Euro 2016 to see if he is finally turning into the world class player he believes he is, IF he performs then France have a match-winner right there in the heart of midfield.

Euro Qualification

France didn’t need to qualify for Euro 2016 after being named the host nation and while everyone else was panicking with important qualifiers the French were just going through the motions with a number of friendlies to prepare them for battle in the summer.

In their last six friendlies they have lost two and won four, their two defeats coming against Brazil and Belgium. Their last friendly saw them beat World Cup winners Germany 2-0 on the night that will be most remembered for the terrorist attacks on the city of Paris.

History in the Tournament

This will the ninth time France have taken part in the European Championships with two final successes, one semi-final heartache and two quarter-final defeats.

Their first European Championship success came in 1984, when they were actually hosts again,  when they defeated Spain 2-0 in the final thanks to goals from Michel Platini and Bruno Bellone, during that cup success they managed to win every single game with Denmark, Belgium, Yugoslavia and Portugal falling the same way of the Spanish.

They had to wait another 16 years to lift that silverware as they reigned supreme in Holland and Belgium as they overcome Italy 2-1 in the Final with David Treseguet scoring the winner courtesy of a golden goal after Sylvain Wiltord had took the game to extra-time with a 90th minute equaliser.

In Euro 2012 France managed to reach the quarter-finals in Ukraine and Poland after finishing second to England in Group D. Their progress came to end in the next round as they were turned over 2-0 by eventual winners Spain.
